Son travail photographique, essentiellement documentaire, explore, tour à tour, paysages et portraits, vie sociale et urbaine, révélant la réalité des problèmes environnementaux que rencontre le Mexique ou tout autre pays d’Amérique Latine. Il cherche également à élargir son travail esthétique et conceptuel, en proposant de nouvelles interprétations de nos sociétés. En effet, la plupart de ses travaux, en relation avec l’histoire de la photographie, tentent une conversation émouvante avec le passé.

Son travail, exposé et publié internationalement, fait partie de plusieurs collections publiques et privées au Mexique, aux Etats-Unis, au Brésil et en Italie. Il a reçu plusieurs prix et mentions au Mexique et à l’étranger dont notamment, le prix Photolucida et a été nommé, en 2010, parmi les 30 photographes émergents. Actuellement chercheur en Arts visuels à la School of Visual Arts de l’Université de Nuevo Leon, il continue ses projets photographiques autour de paysages et d’habitants du continent latino-américain. Alejandro Cartagena vit et travaille à Monterrey, Mexique.

His projects are primarily documentary based, exploring landscape as well as portraiture as a way to examine social, urban and environmental issues of Latin America. His work also seeks to have a relationship to the history of photography either by reinterpreting or by rethinking ways in how to engage poignant issues addressed in the past. This has widened his works’ aesthetic and conceptual approach and added layers of meaning to his complex interpretations of our society. He has been named one of PDN’s 30 emerging photographers and has received the Photolucida Critical Mass Book Award.

His work has been exhibited and published internationally and is in several public and private collections in Mexico, USA, Brazil and Italy. He is the recipient of several major national grants, numerous honorable mentions and acquisition prizes in Mexico and abroad. He is currently teaching at the School of Visual Arts of the University of Nuevo Leon as he continues his photographic projects about Latin American landscapes and its people.
